The Process Of Getting Dental Implants

The dental implant procedure involves all the series of activities that take place from the moment you enter the dental clinic, to getting the actual implants and to the time you leave the health care.  Basically, dental implants are artificial tooth roots. The benefits of dental implants are many, including improving appearance, self-esteem, speech, oral health and comfort. People with a chewing difficulty are able to eat their favourite food with ease after going for dental implant surgery.

The procedure of acquiring dental implants generally involves the following stages:

The Planning Stage

The first step in this stage entails the dentist examining the patient's mouth to determine where to place the dental implant. During this stage, the dental practitioner also reviews dental imaging studies such as CT scans and X-rays. After establishing the most suitable location to place the dental implant, the actual dental implant surgery is scheduled and the patient is asked to come back on the day of operation.

The actual dental implant surgery

On the day of implant placement appointment, the dentist gives the patient local anaesthetic in order to numb the specific area to be operated on.  The orthodontist then inserts the dental implant inside the bone using a special drill and tools. The gum is then seamed together, and this marks the start of the healing phase. The quality of the existing bone greatly determines the healing time. Healing can take between 2 and 6 months. Moreover, osseointegration should happen at around this time.

Testing the dental implant

Once the healing period is over, the next step is to test the dental implant. The purpose of this is to evaluate if osseointegration took place. Once it is verified that it was successful, a prosthetic component (abutment) is attached to the dental implant by use of a screw.  This element acts as support for the replacement crown or tooth. The dental surgeon then creates a personalised implant crown after taking an impression of this component.  The implant crown is made firm by cementing it or screwing it to the abutment.

There are other procedures that may be considered before fixing the implant. When a person has a deficient quantity of bone, it is necessary to perform a bone graft. Additionally, there is also the "sinus lift" aka "sinus augmentation".  This procedure is obligatory when a patient has an extremely weak sinus membrane, such that the dental implant is likely to damage it.
